WISTA 2017 CONFERENCE IN ROTTERDAM – FUTURE-PROOF MARITIME SOLUTIONS – OCTOBER 2017

Danae Bezantakou participated in the 2017 International Conference “FUTURE-PROOF MARITIME SOLUTIONS” & AGM of WISTA International that took place on October 3-6, 2017 in Rotterdam.

Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of the World Maritime University, WMU, addressed the audience on how to prepare the new generation for the future, and other the headline of Maritime solutions throughout the years, past, present & future, we listened to both Dr. Bas Buchner from the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands and Mrs Rose Damen, Non-Executive Director and shareholder at the family-owned Damen Shipyards Group.

Continuing, the next topic chosen by the organizations committee, led by Mrs. Michon-Jolân Bullen is “The clean world of the future” and here the line-up of speakers was equally impressing; Award winning Mr. Ramon Knoester Founder and Board member of the Recycled Islands Foundation and Mrs. Marjolein van Noort, Board member of the Our Oceans Challenge, who spoke under the headline “Below the surface: where ocean and technology meet”.
The afternoon, the focus was on ports, “Staying ahead in ports”, and the Innovation Manager from the Port of Rotterdam, Ms. Marjolein Boer, kicked off after lunch on October 5th at the WISTA International Conference, followed by Mrs. Pauline van Schouwenburg of the Maritime Court in Rotterdam, who spoke on: “The Port and the Court”.

On Friday October 6th, participants moved into the world of BIG DATA where Mrs. Marije Ruysch, Partner at Aviso Instruments B.V. and Pino Spadafora, Rina Services S.p.A., showed the opportunities of data science.
“New technologies facing the industry”.

Aljosja Beije MSc, BeSCOPE Solutions, shared his knowledge about block chain, the latest buzz word in the maritime industry and Henrik Källsson,Deputy Managing Director of Thun Group, gave the insights of being a shipowner in the times of new regulations and how innovation is sparked in a family owned ship owning company.

Leendert Muller is joint managing director of our Member – Multraship Towage and Salvage based at Terneuzen on the River Scheldt in the Netherlands and comes from a family with a long and proud tradition in towage and salvage. He also shared his views, from a shipowner’s perspective, on all modern technology the industry is facing.
